To prevent the negative effects of strong wind, experienced welders may use appropriate windbreaks or other protective measures if possible, or choose a form of welding that is better suited to the unique field conditions. For instance, stick welding (SMAW) generally handles outdoor breezes much better than gas processes and flux-core (FCAW) self-shielded wire creates its own protective gas shield. On the other hand, TIG and standard MIG welding can fail quickly in a strong wind.
Precipitation of any kind can create serious concerns on a welding jobsite. Wet work surfaces can cause potential safety hazards, and excess moisture can lead to electrical hazards as well. Moisture contamination and moisture-sensitive consumables can lead to weak or failed welds, and professional welders may choose to postpone work to preserve safety and work quality. Wet clothing and PPE and reduced visibility can also make it difficult to work smoothly and react to potential risks. While similar to precipitation, humidity and condensation can occur when there is no drop or flake falling from the sky. Humid cool air can lead to condensation as a result of the temperature difference with the hot welding material. Humidity may not seem as disruptive as rain or wind, but moisture can still create problems. Condensation on metal and surface moisture can lead to contamination of welding materials, corrosion and weakened or failed welds. Surfaces should be appropriately prepared and dry before welding begins.
Sometimes the correct decision is simply to stop work for the time being and pick it back up when conditions are safer. This is definitely the case when dealing with thunderstorms, lightning, high winds, severe heat or cold, and heavy rain, snow or ice. Minimal amounts of certain weather conditions can be dealt with and successful welding can still be done, but in the case of extremes, and any time that lighting is present, the job needs to pause. Project deadlines should never take priority over worker or jobsite safety, and any welding done during these conditions would be compromised anyway.

That said, less-than-ideal weather doesn't automatically mean an outdoor weld will be poor quality.
